What are Exceptional Transports?

The category “exceptional transport” includes all those types of cargo that cannot be transported with the normal trucks we are used to seeing on the roads.

Think of a gigantic silo for agricultural activities, large yachts and boats, reinforced concrete constructions that will form parts of a bridge or an industrial prefabricated building.

For this reason, highly specialised transport companies arise that have vehicles and trailers capable of moving these loads from one part of the country to another.

Here are a few facts that may help to better understand when a transport operation is defined as exceptional:

The vehicle must have a total length, including the trailer, greater than 16.50 m (54,13 ft)
Must have a width greater than 2.55 m (8,37 ft) or 2.6 m (8,53 ft) for temperature-controlled transports
Must have a maximum height greater than 4 m (13,12 ft)

For these types of transport, a TECHNICAL TRAFFIC SERVICE is required in addition to SPECIAL TRAFFIC PERMITS.

When is Technical Escort Required for Exceptional Transport?

The Technical Escort for exceptional transports ensures that loads are brought to their destination safely and without causing extreme disruption to traffic, which is why they are mainly carried out at night.

The Technical Escort is necessary and unavoidable if these conditions occur::

Vehicle with a width of more than 3 metres and a length of more than 25 metres
Load protruding more than 2.50 metres to the front or more than 3/10 of the vehicle length to the rear
Cruising speed less than 30 km/h (or 40 km/h in the case of motorways and main roads)

As far as roads are concerned:
Lane width less than 3 metres when the vehicle or transport is exceptional in length or height only
Lane width less than 3.50 metres when the transport is also exceptional in width
Transport dimensions exceeding the lane width minus 20 cm

The weight and size limits beyond which technical escort cars are required are set out in the italian Ministerial Decree of 18 July 1997 no. 3806, ‘Regulations for technical escorts for exceptional vehicles and exceptional transport’.

With regard to the number of technical vehicles required, italian Ministerial Decree of 18 July 1997 No. 3806 unambiguously establishes if and how many escort cars are required for transport.

Key elements are both the size of the convoy and the type of road to be travelled (on a motorway it may take fewer cars than on a provincial road, for example).

What permits do I need to request for my Exceptional Transport?
